Give from the heart

In a previous article, we shared 10 ways to make holiday shopping and gift-giving less stressful. You know what else makes the holiday season less stressful? Giving back! It’s true. Studies have shown that being charitable not only helps others, it’s also good for those who do the giving. It enhances your physical and mental health, and helps to lower blood pressure.

In other words, giving feels good, and feeling good is, well, good for you.

There are several ways to make giving back part of your holiday season. Quite a few brands have incorporated a charitable component into some of their products. For instance, with each purchase of Sephora Stands FEARLESS Rouge Cream Lipstick, Sephora donates $10 to its Sephora Stands initiative, which supports programs that empower women and communities.

Frank and Oak offers their And Capsule Collection, which includes three unisex clothing items made in Canada. Five dollars from each purchase from this collection, goes to Equitas, which is dedicated to promoting human rights and combatting poverty. Combining ethics and good causes, when you purchase an Original Grain timepiece from part of their Barrel Collection (handcrafted watches made with repurposed wood from bourbon barrels and other sustainable materials) a tree is planted in Senegal in conjunction with Trees for the Future.

Or if you’re stressing out over what to get for that person on your list who already has everything, instead of getting them something they don’t need and will never use, why not donate to a charity in their name? Even better if it’s a cause that’s close to their heart.

Another avenue for holiday giving is through Give A Mile, a program that helps people who can’t afford a plane ticket to spend time with terminally ill friends and family through a donation of Aeroplan Miles. All of the funds and miles donated are applied to flights of compassion. You can donate to specific flight stories or contribute to the general pool of miles that can be given to those who need them.

Give A Mile is currently running its holiday campaign until Jan. 1, 2019, with the hope of reaching a target of 50 flights of compassion. Donate now by visiting the Give A Mile page.
